Windsor's England supporters crushed to see Croatia win World Cup semifinal

Downtown Windsor's Manchester Pub was packed with England supporters Wednesday afternoon for the World Cup semifinal against Croatia — but results of the game left the audience deflated.

Croatia defeated England 2-1 and will advance to the final against France on Sunday. Player Mario Mandzukic scored the winning goal in the 109th minute.

Originally from England, Windsor resident Steve Walsh says it's "very sad" but England performed very well to reach the semifinal.

As for the championship game on Sunday, he'll be cheering for France.

"That's very hard for an Englishman to say," Walsh said. "But France."

Maisie Williams will also be cheering for France.

The young girl from England who now lives in Windsor thought it was a good game, but she feels disappointed about the ending.

"I felt really bad for them," she says.

In the mass of English supporters, one Croatian fan was delighted.

"It's wonderful being the only Croatian in the bar," said Barry Makaric. "No one's buying me a beer, though."

He came to the pub to meet a friend and it ended up being a great moment for Makaric.

"It's great, a lot of sad faces today — except for mine."
