Windsor council approves $1.1-million tender for wider roads

Windsor city council approved a $1.1-million dollar tender Monday night to widen areas of Malden Road and South Cameron Boulevard to include paved shoulders for cyclists.

Mayor Drew Dilkens said council has made the biggest investment in cycling infrastructure in the city's history, and its latest decision shows its intention to continue the trend.

"We understand that there are always ways to do things better, but we're making incremental improvements," he explained.

Avid cyclist Jessica Bondy asked for better signage in part of the tender area that does not include paved shoulders.

Council added the request to the motion and decided a "share the road" sign will be installed.

"The plan is to hopefully get a bike lane put in there," said Bondy. "But we want to make sure the city is going to follow through with that."

Work on the roads needs to be completed by December to qualify for the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund which would cover about one third of the expected cost.
