The world’s first fully AI-generated film is being roundly trolled online
The world’s first fully AI-generated film is almost here – entitled Next Stop Paris.
While AI has been used everywhere from medicine through to journalism, using it to create a whole film is a new frontier.
Made by TCLtv+ Studios, it will feature professional voice actors and an original script but the imagery will be generated with AI tools.
Next Stop Paris will be a romantic story between Claire and a man she meets on a train to Paris, and is described as an “AI-powered love story”. It will open this summer.
But the trailer, released last week, seems to have attracted some trolling online, as audiences criticise the use of the AI technology, and the resulting visuals.
“It's really funny the way AI doesn't know how reflections work,” one tweet read.
“It seems like AI didn't get the memo about making a great movie!” another user said.
TCLtv+ Studios is a brand of TCL (Technology Group), a partly state-owned Chinese company that predominantly sells consumer electronics including televisions, mobile phones and air conditioners. Their latest project is Next Stop Paris, which is sure to get people talking even more passionately when the full film is released.
“Story will be at the heart of everything we do,” said Chris Regina, chief content officer at TCL.
“We are empowering creators and storytellers to use this new technology so the human experience is enriched, and we believe that creatives with limitless imagination will drive endless innovation. We view Next Stop Paris as an early experiment and we’re excited to see how it’s received in the town square.”
However, audiences remain to be convinced, as the online reaction to the first look has demonstrated.

According to TCL: “The AI technology used to create these characters and fictional world allows the creative teams to push boundaries and invigorate the viewer experience, while also creating new opportunities for marketing partners”.
“The push into originals helps drive a market advantage in a noisy environment filled with content options, and the IP has many applications across the platform from interactive components to sponsorable elements and more.
“TCL is well positioned to take advantage of this cutting-edge technology and is exploring content development in all formats with several series and specials in the development pipeline.”
