Yukon man to be sentenced for incest
A 45-year-old Yukon man was found guilty of incest after taking his teenage daughter as a wife.
He'll be in court Tuesday for a sentencing hearing.
The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victims, was arrested and charged last winter. He had been living at a wilderness home 150 kilometres from the nearest town.
A Supreme Court ruling from divorce proceedings shows the man moved his wife and three daughters, aged eight, 13 and 15, to live in a wall tent in a remote area of the territory five years ago.
He assured them ‘God would provide’, and started building a cabin.
His wife testified he was a ‘one-man cult’ who physically and emotionally abused the family with bizarre corporal punishments.
To make money, the wife took a hotel job in the nearest town while the children were home-schooled.
The next spring the man told his wife that, under directions from God, he’d taken the eldest daughter to be his new wife.
Police arrested the man in December.
A judge deemed their bush home in the Yukon to be equivalent to false imprisonment. The judge awarded all the family assets to the wife, and ordered the man to have no contact with the family, even after he’s released from jail.
