Yvonne Fritz leaving politics after 22 years as northeast Calgary MLA

Longtime Progressive Conservative Yvonne Fritz is joining the list of MLAs who are leaving politics.

Fritz said Wednesday she is retiring after representing Calgary-Cross for 22 years, For ten of those years, she sat at the cabinet table as minister for children and youth services, housing and urban affairs, as well as seniors and community supports.

Several MLAs have announced their retirements in the past few months, fuelling speculation that Alberta is headed for a provincial election sometime this spring.

Donna Kennedy-Glans, the PC MLA for Calgary-Varsity, Mary Anne Jablonski, the former cabinet minister and MLA for Red Deer-North, and Red Deer South MLA Cal Dallas also recently announced they would not stand for re-election.

Former PC cabinet minister and Battle River-Wainwright MLA Doug Griffiths resigned his seat last month.

Former Liberal leader Raj Sherman is also leaving politics.
