Zendaya Walked the Met Gala Red Carpet, Changed, and Came Back for Round 2

Our long national nightmare (five years without a Zendaya Met Gala) is over.

On May 4, Zendaya arrived at The Metropolitan Museum of Art with a brand-new title, having been appointed as one of the evening’s cochairs by Vogue global editorial director Anna Wintour, chief content officer of Condé Nast. This also marked the Challengers star’s first Met Gala since nailing the Camp theme in 2019, dressed in a light-up Cinderella gown by Tommy Hilfiger.

All this to say, Zendaya and her longtime stylist Law Roach had a lot to live up to this year, especially after serving one Met Gala–worthy look after another during back-to-back press tours for Dune: Part Two and her sexy tennis movie, Challengers.

To the shock of absolutely nobody, they delivered. Not once, but twice.

In keeping with the Garden of Time dress code, Zendaya arrived on the scene wearing a blue, black, and green forest scene by Margiela, with Law Roach not far behind in a black suit by the same label. The dark feminine trend was in, but nobody has done it like Zendaya.

The artistry is really in the details here, as Zendaya’s dress includes faux grapes, a bird on her head, a long feather in her hair, and a veil for a bit of mystery.

Her makeup look was dramatic as well, with her nails and lips wine-red and her eyes smudged maroon. It’s reminiscent of the recent high-contrast beauty looks we’ve seen on the runway, especially Pat McGrath’s “porcelain dolls” which were, yes, for the Margiela show.

The accessories matched the dress: She wore an emerald ring and matching asymmetrical emerald and diamond earrings.

We all relaxed to bask in the glory of the slay and pore over the outfit details. But then Zendaya reappeared. In a completely different gown.

This gown is Givenchy by John Galliano from 1996, and Z paired it with possibly the most fabulous floral fascinator we have ever laid eyes on.

Her head is an actual bouquet!

Roach told The New York Times, during an interview that was published on May 2, that Zendaya’s Met Gala look hadn’t even been made yet (although, he didn’t specify which look). “We’ve been on two press tours—Dune 2 and Challengers—and doing two Vogue covers,” he reminded the interviewer. “The dress isn’t even made. They won’t fit until Saturday.”

Of course they nailed the theme, just as they always do. I mean, who could forget her Joan of Arc-inspired Versace gown for “Heavenly Bodies” in 2018? Zendaya’s Met Gala looks have stood out among the celeb-filled crowd since her first appearance in 2015.

Unfortunately, between COVID-19 and her busy film schedule, she hasn’t been back since 2019’s “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” where she was one of the select few celebs to understand the prompt.
