5 accused of robbing Dartmouth cabbie at knifepoint
Five people were arrested and held in custody, accused of using a knife to rob a taxi driver in Dartmouth Sunday evening.
At 2:19 p.m. Halifax Regional Police received a call that a taxi driver in Dartmouth had picked up five passengers — three males and two females at Alderney Landing. Police said while on Portland Street near King, one of the males pulled out a knife, demanding money and the driver’s cell phone.
Police said after taking an undisclosed amount of cash and the cell phone, the group got out of the cab and ran away.
The driver was not injured.
Later on, police received a second call about a group of suspicious people walking on Erskine Street. Officers went to the scene with a canine unit. They arrested two females.
The canine unit continued to track in the area with help from people who live in the neighbourhood and police arrested three males as a result.
Police said all five are being charged with robbery and are being held in custody. They are scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday. They said the two teenage girls are under the age of 18. So is one young man. They will appear in youth court in Halifax. The other two men will appear in Dartmouth provincial court.
