5 things to do in Windsor-Essex this weekend

Happy Halloween!

Thousands of little ghouls and goblins will be prowling from door to door.

If you're not too busy handing out or eating candy, CBC Windsor's Mike Evans has some scary suggestions to get you through the weekend.

Windsor Scarehouse

Voted one of the top seven Halloween haunts in all of Ontario by the Hamilton Spectator, the Scarehouse will have you walking through almost pitch-black passageways. The only thing to rely on is your sense of hearing.

The theme of the Scarehouse is creepy little kids. So you'll hear kids laughing and crying and sounding all possessed throughout the tour.

Visit the Scarehouse at the Tecumseh Mall in Windsor, open Friday until midnight tonight, and if it's raining don't worry, the line-up queue is covered so you'll stay dry.

Phantoms of the Canard Ghost

It's a ghost tour not to be missed.

Open Friday and Saturday night with tours starting at 7:30 p.m. at the River Canard canoe company at 9407 Malden Rd.

The whole trip is lit by lanterns, with half of the tour through an old cemetery on foot and the other half taking place in a canoe up the Canard River.

Your guide will be telling you all about scary tales and mysterious historical events that happened on the lands that surround you.

Make sure to ask your guide about what lies beneath the front steps of St. Joseph's Church.

Stand-prov showcase

Switching gears from scary to funny, here's a neat event taking place that's never been done before.

The Stand-prov showcase throws local comedians into the world of improv. Regular acts are out the window as these comics depend solely on their wits and the material provided by audience suggestions.

It's a good exercise for comedians to get out of their comfort zones and a great opportunity for the audience to get in on the fun.

The stand-prov showcase takes place at the Comedy Quarry on Ottawa Street in Windsor Friday and Saturday night starting at 9 p.m.

Windsor International Film Festival

WIFF is celebrating 10 years and starts Saturday at the Capitol Theatre.

The festival runs over nine days, with 109 films. A mix of local, Canadian and international films will be shown. From documentaries to dramas, comedies to early Oscar-contenders, there's something in it for everyone.

Mike says keep an eye out for Beyond the Deep, shot here in Windsor by local filmmaker Kyle Mosonyi. The movie's about a man who discovers a wormhole while jogging and uses it to travel through time.

The Windsor International Film Festival runs until November 9.

Orchid show

The Essex County Orchid Society's fifth annual orchid show and sale takes place at Colasanti's in Ruthven Saturday and Sunday.

The best best orchids are entered in a competition. There will also be orchids from around the world for sale.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days and there will be free lectures and workshops on orchids.
