Alta. wildfire prompts voluntary evacuation of 12 homes

A charred fence-post smolders in front of vehicles and buildings destroyed in the Grassland-area fire in northeast Alberta.

A change in wind direction has prompted the voluntary evacuation of 12 homes due to an encroaching wildfire in northeastern Alberta.

RCMP in Bonnyville, Alta., say the fire is now moving in a northwest direction, which has put residents "in a degree of danger."

The homes are located about four kilometres north of Moose Lake, about 250 kilometres northeast of Edmonton.

Although the evacuation is voluntary and a precautionary measure, RCMP are asking residents to clear out.

The fire is one of two that remained out of control in northern Alberta on Tuesday.

A third fire near Lodgepole is no longer out of control and is being held.

"Firefighters have worked through the night two nights in a row now to put fireguards around each of them," said fire information officer Geoff Driscoll, Tuesday morning.

The province issued a fire ban for all forested provincial lands Monday as the wind and warm, dry weather continues to make the job difficult for firefighters.

The ban covers outdoor fires, the use of portable campfires and fireworks from Waterton National Park north along the foothills to beyond Manning and northeast to Fort McMurray.
