Baseball-sized hail hits southern Manitoba in Friday storm

A resident in Altona, Man. woke up Friday to be greeted by baseball-sized hail.

David Sawatzky said the storm rolled into the area around 8:30 a.m. with large hail falling just before 9 a.m. The area was under a severe thunderstorm warning at the time.

"Most of it, I would say, was in the pea-sized to golf-ball-sized hail, but some that were scattered across my lawn were baseball-sized. Yeah, there were some pretty big ones; you could spot them on the lawn. There were piles of them," Sawatzky said.

Sawatzky said plenty of branches came down on his property during the storm and some vegetation was flattened by the hail.

CBC's Angela Johnston caught some of the crazy weather on her way to Emerson, Man. Here's what her morning drive looked like.
