Ikea monkey earns year’s most fashionable pet in Guardian review

It's officially the year of the monkey in fashion.

The Guardian has honoured Darwin the Ikea monkey with the most fashionable pet title in its year-in-review roundup of fashionable trends.

Darwin's miniature shearling coat delighted the masses earlier this month when the macaque wandered around the parking lot of a Toronto Ikea store. He's since become an Internet sensation, with one woman even claiming she was getting a tattoo of the monkey.

Darwin has removed his coat since authorities moved him to the Story Book Farm Primate Sanctuary in Sunderland, Ontario. But his fashion sense will live on with other memorable pets of the year.

Fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld's cat, Choupette, also made the list along with Kim Kardashian's former kitten.

"And yet they were all trumped by Darwin," the Guardian story says.

The monkey drew comparisons with several celebrities who share his penchant for sheepskin, most of them British. Football commentator John Motson wears a similar coat, though lacks the furry sleeves that make Darwin such a trendsetter.

The former frontman for Oasis, Liam Gallagher, has also been spotted in a shearling coat. A Twitter user joked about his resemblance to Darwin:

Kim Kardashian was pitted against the monkey in another Twitter joke comparing their furry coats.
