Four hamsters rescued from Washington house fire

Tiny Oxygen Masks Credited With Big Hamster Rescue (ABC News)

Four little hamsters are lucky to be alive.

Last week, firefighters fighting a fire in a mobile home in Lacey, Washington, discovered a hamster cage housing five hamsters: Oreo, Madonna, and their three babies. All of them had passed out from smoke inhalation.

“Apparently they were married. The family had made a marriage certificate for Oreo and Madonna. It was pretty cute,” Lacey Fire District 3 Battalion Chief Tim Hulse told KTLA.

The firefighters acted quickly. Firefighter Eric Bamer created a makeshift hamster-sized oxygen mask out of tubing and a plastic bag. He was able to resuscitate four of the five hamsters.

“The primary reason we were there was to put out a house fire,” Hulse told TODAY.com. “But we’re in the business of customer service, and any time we’re called to help people, we do the best we can to make their bad situation a little better.”

Hulse posted photos on Twitter of their rescue efforts.

Oreo, Madonna, and their two surviving offspring are now safe at home with their owners.

No one was at home when the fire started, and no firefighters were injured. They believe the fire started in the laundry room.

Also last week, firefighters in North Texas rescued a pet frog from a house fire. The frog was unharmed in the blaze and reunited with its worried owner.
