Girlie, the ‘power plant dog,’ finds new home

Last year, a 4-month-old puppy showed up at the Exelon power plant in Dallas, Texas.

Power plant worker Kara noticed her, dubbed her Girlie, and formed a slow friendship with the stray dog.

"With patience and compassion, Kara slowly earned Girlie's trust. It was apparent to Kara, who has two agility dogs, that Girlie possessed an innate desire to be around humans, even though her feral nature made her wary," Dogster's Liz Acosta wrote.

Plant workers looked out for the dog, but Kara worried for Girlie's future. She was concerned the dog, now 1, would be impregnated by another stray dog in the area.

So Kara started looking for an adoptive home for the wild dog — not an easy task — and chronicled the search on Facebook.

Her determination paid off.

"Wow, what a great few days! Girlie is getting ADOPTED! That means she is going to her FOREVER HOME with no worrying about fosters or anything! Arrangements are still being set up, but it is a GO! Girlie will be trapped (humanely of course), then taken straight to a Vet, and then will be going to her forever home!" Kara wrote on Facebook.

"Some of the best news ever! Plus I get to visit her. I am so happy that this is all working out. She is a very very special dog, and she will always hold a piece of my heart."

Watch the first effort to catch Girlie below. The smart dog was eventually safely trapped and taken to a vet before arriving at her new home.

"Well, Girlie has now officially started her next journey with life. She just left the power plant for good. I'm so relieved but I already miss her so much. I'm fighting the tears as I know this was my ultimate goal but saying goodbye is never easy. Thank you to her many followers, the encouragement, the tears, the hopefulness, and the ones who followed her entire journey with us. Girlie will always be one of my biggest accomplishments. She will always make me smile. Be a good girl and I hope you are happy in your next endeavour," Kara wrote.

According to Girlie's new owner, Kyle Haldan Thompson, the dog is adjusting well to domestic life.

"Just wanted everyone to know Girlie is doing wonderful. She and I had great bonding time over the weekend!" she wrote on Facebook this morning. "She is doing great on leash...I am amazed at her willingness. She is eating well and actually played with one of her toys this morning."
