Hang ten! Cool dogs surf for charity

Late last month, 43 furry surfers competed at the eighth annual Loews Coronado Bay Surf Dog Competition at Imperial Beach, California to benefit the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).

Almost $20,000 was raised at the event, which was sponsored by Unleashed by Petco.

"We're looking for stability on the board, we’re looking for form, and we're looking for length of ride," judge Brian Johnson, general manager of Loews Coronado Bay Resort, told the San Diego Union Tribune. "They get extra points if they spin around on the board, and for a great dismount on the beach."

Tillman, the English Bulldog famous for his skateboarding videos online and Hallmark channel show Who Let the Dogs Out?, took top spot in the large dog category of the competition. Australian Kelpie Abbie Girl won the small dog category for the fourth year in a row.

Hanzo, a Boxer, and Kalani, a Golden Retriever, won the tandem surf category.

The competition is the oldest dog-surfing contest in California.

"Dogs just love running around free, off leash. It’s natural to take it one step further, to take the dog out to surf with you," Peter Noll, an architect who surfs with his Bernese Mountain Dog, Nani, and is a founding member of So Cal Surf dogs, told the San Diego Union Tribune.

"It's an incredible way to get exercise."
