Military dad reads bedtime story to toddler — on prerecorded video

A YouTube video of a little girl watching a recording of her military dad reading her a story has captured hearts everywhere, quickly going viral.

"Can I have a hug?" he asks her at one point. The two-year-old responds by hugging the screen.

The heartwarming moment shows just one of many prerecorded bedtime stories the doting dad made before he left his family for basic training for the Air Force in Texas.

"It was very difficult on our daughter, as she didn't understand why he was leaving and how long he'd be gone," the girl's mother told Good Morning America. "Each day she would ask to see Daddy and we'd play one."

Military families, so often separated for long periods of time, don't lead easy lives. However recent developments in technology have softened the blows of distance.

"There are sacrifices in being a military family, but technology today is so great in helping to ease the pain," the airman's wife wrote. "I'll be honest, on difficult nights I was known to have him read me Farmer Mickey, as well."

The United Through Reading program facilitates similar tender moments, connecting away-from-home parents with their children via pre-recorded story time.
