Deadbeat parent tracking legislation proposed

Legislation that will make it easier to track down parents who leave the province while still owing child-support payments, has been tabled by the P.E.I. government.

The bill was put forward by Minister of Justice Janice Sherry.

"Anytime we have the opportunity to improve the living conditions of, especially people who are, you know, relying on child support, I think we have a responsibility to improve those services for the people who are in need," said Sherry.

Sherry said the bill will make it easier for maintenance support workers on P.E.I. to contact workers in other provinces in order to contact a parent who's left the Island.

The bill also streamlines the process of changing child-support payments to it can be done more quickly, and without tying up the courts.
