Feminine products for needy goal of 28-day campaign

A 28-day campaign to collect feminine hygiene products for the shelves of P.E.I. food banks will launch Saturday.

The Island-wide project, which runs from Feb. 28 to March 28, is called "Taking care of Women's Business. Period."

Tracey Comeau says she saw an online story last month about a homeless woman who felt she'd lost the last bit of her dignity when she couldn't afford feminine hygiene products.

Comeau says she checked with local food banks, to see if those kinds of items were in demand here.

"So initially I checked with the Charlottetown food bank and then I thought, 'Well, this is easy enough to go across the province,'" said Comeau.

"We have a province where I think we can achieve anything like this together. So I checked and sure enough the food banks across Canada, they need these feminine hygiene products and it remains on the needs list."

There are 18 collections sites across the Island where feminine hygiene products can be donated:

- Murphy's Pharmacy locations

- Co-operators Insurance in Charlottetown, Summerside, Tignish and O'Leary

- P.E.I. Business Women's Association

- Queen Elizabeth Hospital

- Samuel's Coffee House, Summerside

- Atlantic Fitness East, Montague and Mount Stewart

- Main Street Pharmasave, Souris
