Fireworks at football games under scrutiny, fire marshal says

Changes ordered following pyrotechnics incident at Mosaic Stadium

Randy Ryba, Regina's fire marshal, says the use of fireworks at Mosaic Stadium during Saskatchewan Roughriders football games will be reviewed, following an incident at Friday's game.

As of Monday, the Friday night episode was still under investigation, with more information expected Tuesday. However, Ryba said they know that an electronic box — attached to the MaxTron video screen at Mosaic Stadium — caught fire.

The electronic box is used to ignite fireworks that shoot from the video array as part of a visual show during the football game.

The flames were quickly doused and there was no damage to the MaxTron.

Ryba said officials will look at various things associated with fireworks as part of a broader review of the incident.

"I'm going to re-review the pyrotechnics, the fire safety plan as well as Mosaic's," Ryba told CBC News Monday. "We're meeting with the director of safety and security for the Riders."

Ryba said public safety is paramount.

"We don't need anything that goes sideways or has a fire implication in any of our public gatherings or anything gathering at all," Ryba added. "So we certainly will be reviewing and meeting with the pyrotechnic company."
