Frozen pipes create water woes at Sagkeeng First Nation
Running water has been fully restored to the community of Sagkeeng First Nation, after intermittant service over a two-day period left hundreds of residents without water.
Chief Donavan Fontaine said frozen pipes caused numerous water main breaks this week.
Fontaine believes the thawing of the frozen ground has resulted in pipes shifting and breaking.
“The frost is starting to thaw and move a little bit,” said Fontaine.
He estimated more than 600 people had trouble getting water over the two-day period.
Fontaine said schools were closed on Thursday and Friday, along with offices, training centres, Child and Family Services and the local Tim Hortons.
Water was back on around 8 p.m. Friday night.
"It's not as fast as we like it, as some people would have liked, but certainly quicker than some places, for example Winnipeg,” said Fontaine.
Fontaine expected all schools and offices that were closed because of a lack of water will be fully operational Monday.
