Halifax break-in alarms South Street residents

Some residents of South Street in Halifax are shaken up after a man entered their home while they were sleeping at five o'clock Thursday morning and stripped down to his underwear in one of the bedrooms.

The building is a set of flats being rented out to students from Dalhousie University.

Thursday morning a man went through the unlocked doors and into the apartments. Inside the lower level he opened a bedroom door and woke up a couple who were in the room.

The man, dressed only in his underwear, also went to the upstairs apartments.

Nicole Van Vliet was one of the residents awakened by the man.

"It was just very weird," she said. "You wake up to hear banging and think maybe it's your roommates but clearly it wasn't. It was some intruder and the fact that nothing was stolen makes it even more confusing, I would say, and disconcerting. I mean, what were they doing in here if they weren't trying to steal something."

The landlord has since put new locks on the doors.

Van Vliet will be heading back home to Vancouver later this week and has been shaken up by the incident.

"It's not something that you want to have to experience," she said. "I'm so thankful I didn't answer the door and think it was my roommates and open the door and say 'hey what are you guys doing?'"

The news of the intruder came as a surprise to other Dalhousie students like Emily Tucker.

"That's really scary," she said. "My only question would be if he's not mentally well for that to be happening."

Maggie MacLellan had personal concerns.

"I live in Dartmouth currently but I'll be moving closer to campus next year so it is concerning that that is happening," she said.

Halifax police were notified of the incident Thursday afternoon. They say they are looking for a thin white man in his twenties. They also urge people to lock their doors and windows at night.
