Helicopter crash near Kitchener, Ont., kills woman

A helicopter crash at Region of Waterloo International Airport on Monday morning, has killed a woman and sent a man to hospital with serious injuries.

Waterloo emergency services said the crash occurred around 11:30 a.m. ET, when the helicopter went down in a swampy area of the airport.

The chopper went into a pond and was partially submerged, according to emergency officials, making it additionally difficult for the rescue crews.

One occupant of the helicopter — a woman — was pronounced dead at the scene. The man who was transported to Grand River Hospital in Kitchener with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

He has since been airlifted to hospital in nearby Hamilton.

John Prno, the director of emergency services in Waterloo region, says the man and woman were the only occupants of the aircraft.

No names have been released.

The aircraft was from Great Lakes Helicopter, a private flight-training and charter company based at the airport. Officials at the school have declined to comment on the incident.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Transportation Safety Board.
