HIV vaccine trial approved by FDA

A vaccine that may prevent HIV has been given the green light by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to begin clinical trials in humans, according to Canadian researchers.

The announcement was made on the campus of the University of Western Ontario in London, Ont.

"We have gone through so many different challenges to come to this point," said Dr. Chil-Yong Kang, a researcher and professor at Western's Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry. "This is the first time that I feel very happy and comfortable to initiate this human clinical trial."

Scientists at the University of Western Ontario, financially backed by the pharmaceutical venture company Sumagen, developed the vaccine, which is based on a genetically modified killed whole virus. The vaccine stimulated a strong immune response in early testing and appears to have no adverse effects, according to the researchers.

"FDA approval for human clinical trials is an extremely significant milestone for our vaccine, which has the potential to save the lives of millions of people around the world by preventing HIV infection," said Kang.

He said there have been three clinical trials for an HIV vaccine in the past using live viruses. "None of the researchers in the past have used this approach," he says of his use of a killed virus.

    The vaccine, SAV001, will now have to undergo three phases of human clinical trials;

Phase 1. Beginning in January 2012, this phase will involve 30 HIV-positive people on whom safety will be retested.

Phase 2. This phase will examine immune responses in humans and will involve 600 HIV-negative people who are at high risk of contracting the AIDS virus.

Phase 3. This phase will determine the efficacy of the vaccine and will involve 6,000 HIV-negative volunteers at high risk of contracting the virus.

its crazy how people here are still have a stigma to how HIV is contracted that you have to be promiscuous to get it. It's crazy how people think. Welp, this is yahoo and their identities are hidden so they can show who they really are. Anyway, in reference to the article, this is a great advancement in science and hope it is successful. It will be one less epidemic and many more lives saved. Hopefully, this vaccine will be accessible to the public and countries around the world who barely have sterile hospital servicing.

this is great news, to finally hear that a functional vaccine for HIV is ready for testing. All i hope is that some corporation doesnt try to lobby against this vaccine to further their money agendas.

I really hope this works out. This can truly be a miracle.

Even a 1% efficacy rate is a step forward and it means 1% fewer people infected. I don't understand why, as long as it's safe, partially successful vaccines are not marketed at this time. As long as side effects are known, it's a win-win situation.

Victor , in case you haven't heard . A CFO of major pharmaceutical corporation stated to share holders "The best thing about being in the business , is its longevity because : There is more profit in the remedy , than in the cure " In short those same corporate criminals are mot REALLY trying to cure anything. Just keep the victims " in the system" Chemotherapy sessions for example can exceed 5k dollars a session , conversely , cured patients will no longer need exorbitantly priced drug " cocktails " or extended periods of therapeutic treatment .

After reading some of the posts here--all I can think is OMG! have we not progressed any further in our thinking about this disease. This kind of thinking is what let this virus get a stronghold in humans to begin with. Think about all the lives that would have been saved if a vaccine had come around soon after the virus was discovered--all the people who contracted HIV through blood transfusions, health care workers who got the disease accidently. The children who have it--do you idiots really think that all the children who have died from AIDS deserved to get it as a punishment from GOD. For all of you who think AIDS is only for the "deviants" in our society keep this thought in mind--viruses have a tendency to mutate--what happens if it mutates into something that can be passed to each other as easily as a cold virus can?

By definition humans are the virus on this planet. We have just mutated again, and you can expect the earth to send us another curveball in the future.

Maybe this is a stupid question . . . but unless they monitor the sexual partners of those injected with the vaccine, how are they going to know if it is actually effective??? I understand the controls of the trial . . . 600 and 6000 HIV-negative people who are at high risk for contracting the virus . . . but how do they monitor the variables??? If none of the people in the trial test positive for the HIV virus, does that mean the vaccine works, or does that mean that those people did not have sexual contact (or needle sharing, etc) with someone infected with the virus??? And, for those that do test positive, does it mean that the vaccine doesn't work, or that they were positive when the vaccine was given, since it can take months for a person to test positive. The way I see it, unless they inject those receiving the vaccine with a live HIV virus, it's effectiveness will always be in question. There doesn't seem to be way to determine and monitor whether or not those receiving the vaccine actually had at risk contact with a person or source that is HIV positive. Just my thoughts . . .

If that typical group has a certain chance of being infected and less than that percent end up infected the difference is the effectiveness

Alright now we're getting somewhere! I praise those volunteers...I would've volunteered. Sacrificing my health would be worth it. I know that sounds crazy, but anything to help others stay healthy.

Thanks but no thanks, just try to stay healthy

I hope that it helps, but the FDA has approved some dangerous things in the past... I definitely won't be getting one any time soon.
    • prutzko123  •  5 months ago
So 1 thing is not very clear, the vaccine will supposedly cure already infected ppl OR it will prevent ppl from getting infected... 2 quite different things...

So many people have died--way too young. This would be incredible

WOW, this could be quite an amazing gift to people all over the world and change the course of history if this works out! Let us all hope that money and greed do create any sort of red tape that would halt/restrict this monumental progress. It can be done, scientific breakthroughs have improved the quality of life, especially in medicine, throughout history.
