Kelowna man arrested after woman attacked with hammer

RCMP cordon off a home on Mission Springs Drive in Kelowna, B.C., after a 24-year-old man allegedly attacked his mother with a hammer Thursday evening.

Kelowna RCMP have a 24-year-old man in custody after a woman was attacked with a hammer Thursday night.

Const. Kris Clark says police were called about a disturbance on Mission Springs Drive in Kelowna, shortly after 9 p.m. PT. The woman was rushed to Kelowna General Hospital with life-threatening injuries and is now in critical condition.

Neighbour Darryl Evans told CBC News on Friday morning that the 24-year-old man police arrested was the woman's son.

"A shocker. Totally a shocker with the neighborhood. You don't think it's going to happen in your neighborhood, but things like that do happen, unfortunately," said Evans.

Evans says he knows the family well and hasn't heard of previous violent incidents.

The man remains in police custody and has not been charged.
