Liberal Mitzie Hunter nabs Scarborough riding seat

Community activist and self-proclaimed 'Subway Champion' Mitzie Hunter has retained the Liberal seat in Scarborough-Guildwood after a campaign fought on scrapping the proposed LRT along the Sheppard Avenue corridor.

Hunter received 8,852 votes, according to unofficial results released by Elections Ontario. She was followed by Conservative candidate Ken Kirupa with 7,606 votes, and former TTC chair and NDP candidate Adam Giambrone with 7,010.

A native of Jamaica, Hunter was part of a city council-appointed panel that previously recommended that Toronto build an LRT rather than a subway to connect Scarborough the existing grid.

Nearly two weeks into the 28-day campaign the newest Liberal MPP said she supported building a subway because "residents in Scarborough deserve high quality transit to get them moving easily and seamlessly."

Hunter succeeds former cabinet minister Margarett Best who resigned her seat in late June after being twice-elected.
