Man dies after bulldozer falls through ice

A man working for a company exploring for uranium is dead after the bulldozer he was on fell through through the ice in northern Saskatchewan.

The 54-year-old man died Monday on Cree Lake, about 600 kilometres north of Saskatoon.

According to the RCMP, he was operating a D6 Caterpillar bulldozer when the machine went through the ice into water that was about 20 metres deep.

It happened at the CanAlaska Uranium Ltd. exploration site, which is about 600 kilometres northeast of Buffalo Narrows by road and approximately 210 kilometres by air, the RCMP said.

The worker was employed by a drilling company, DJ Drilling Ltd., out of Aldergrove, B.C.

The body was recovered and taken to Prince Albert where an autopsy is expected to be completed Wednesday.

Occupational health and safety officers and the provincial coroner are investigating.

The man's name hasn't been released. His next of kin has not yet been notified, the RCMP said.

In a news release, CanAlaska said it has suspended operations at its Cree East project until further notice.

"The company's directors, management and staff extend their deepest condolences to family and friends of the deceased," the news release said.
