Nanny's Mississauga Quality Inn fire death investigated as a homicide

Peel police are investigating the death of a woman from the Philippines as a homicide after her body was found Saturday during a fire incident at a Mississauga inn.

Thornhill resident Evelyn Bumatay Castillo, 43, who worked as a nanny, died in hospital on Saturday. Autopsy results found she died as a result of foul play, and that she sustained injuries that were separate from the fire.

Castillo was working as a temporary worker in Canada caring for children.

"It is an ongoing investigation. We're still trying to determine what she was doing there," said Peel Const. George Tudos. "Police will be looking at any video surveillance, speaking to witnesses or anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident."

Emergency responders found Castillo in a room at the Quality Inn at 50 Britannia Road East in Mississauga, not far from Pearson Airport, where they were responding to reports of a fire.

Police said the fire happened in a single room at the inn.

The death is Peel region's fifth homicide this year. The regional police homicide and missing persons bureau is leading the investigation.
