More Stanley Cup riot charges laid
The Crown has approved nine more charges against four suspects in the Stanley Cup riot in Vancouver, bringing to 186 the total criminal charges laid against 71 suspected rioters.
The latest group range in age from 17 to 25, from Richmond, North Vancouver and Surrey. All are charged with participating in a riot. Three are also charged with mischief, while the fourth is also facing charges of break and enter.
Police have said they expect to recommend more charges as they identify protesters from photos and video taken during the mayhem.
Last week, police unveiled a new poster featuring images of 100 suspected rioters, for distribution across the region.
They have also set up a website and used cutting-edge video analysis to link suspects in hundreds of photos and videos to specific criminal actions.
The riot erupted after the Vancouver Canucks lost the seventh game of the Stanley Cup Finals to the Boston Bruins June 15, 2011.
The first person convicted in the riot was sentenced to 17 months in jail earlier this year.
Twenty-year-old Ryan Dickinson admitted to trashing an unmarked police car and vandalizing a clothing store, and pleaded guilty to participating in a riot.
To date, the Integrated Riot Investigation Team has recommended 348 criminal charges against 150 suspected rioters.
