Obese Ottawa man cleans pool for private access

An obese Ottawa man who placed an online ad offering to clean someone's pool in return for the right to swim there without the embarrassment of swimming in public has found the perfect spot thanks to a nearby family — and he's already lost 10 pounds.

Leslie Duff, 40, weighs about 400 pounds after years of battling with weight problems. Duff wanted to get in shape and preferred swimming because he has "60-year-old" knees. But he found it embarrassing to use public pools. Worrying about what onlookers thought or said kept him from focusing on the task at hand.

On May 1 Duff posted an ad on the online classifieds site Kijiji, offering labour in return for private pool use, but received no responses.

But when he was interviewed in mid-May on CBC Radio's Ottawa Morning about his ordeal, Duff received about 300 emails from Ottawa and all over the country.

Duff said many people offered pools, while others said "if I had a pool, you'd be my guy."

Ultimately, the Campbell-Wynn family on Upper Dwyer Hill Road answered the call, just 10 minutes away from Duff's home.

Amy Campbell, a management consultant in labour relations, heard the interview and decided to help a man who she felt had shown "an entrepreneurial spirit — a really resourceful individual who's looking to improve himself."

Duff doesn't have to worry about privacy: The family of four's pool is indoors. In fact, it's Campbell and her husband Eric Wynn who have opened not just their home, but their bedroom. It's the only way to get to the pool.

"You do what you can to help people out," Campbell said.

"I've got a pool, he needs a pool. Why not?"

The pool is about 15 metres long and three metres wide.

Duff said it was a perfect fit right away — the couple and their teenagers are friendly, the location is good and, because it's indoors, he can continue swimming in the fall. "Every day I've come I've loved being here," he said.

Campbell said in return Duff has done the pool maintenance, which is good news for the kids. Pool work had been their chore.

Duff uses the pool four times a week and has increased from 20 laps a session to 70, has lost 10 pounds, and his knees feel better after swims.

The family is often busy with work, sports and music, but Duff always has company from the family pets — two rabbits, two dogs, and a pot-bellied, litter-trained pig named Hamlet.

"The pets greet me when I get here without judgment, perhaps," he said with a laugh. "As a matter of fact, there's a window here where the dogs will sit and watch me swim. For the first couple of days I even found that disconcerting, but I've come to quite appreciate the fact that they're coaching me on."

peter. Do get some professional help for your problem. Really, dude, you are a downer and sound like an idiot. Of course, you ARE an idiot but wouln't it be nice if you would get professional help and learn to become a human being? Go to bed, peter, and phone a psychiatrist tomorrow so you can get back on the path of being a human being.

Hopefully this guy can stay commited to his new resolve. Losing weight after having fallen into many bad habits is so very difficult. Nice to see people helping people as well.

Duff I understand what you are going through, I am overweight and feel the same way you do. Doing anything out in public is very hard having someone stare at you because you are over weight is not funny. Thank you to the family that are helping him out you are a very ood family. :0)

That is one of the nicest stories I have read :-) You will not only lose the weight with the swimming, Duff, you will also lose weight cleaning the pool :-) Talk about a win-win solution. I also am overweight too, Joanne. I am slowly cutting back on how much I eat which will help and slowly doing more exercise which is the best way to lose weight that will stick.

This is called bartering. It was used a lot in the old days. A very heart warming story that proves that if you want something bad enough, you will find a way. Way to go Duff and congratulations to the fine family who helped you out.

Hitting the pool with that load is called battering.

peter, you tool and shill. Go to bed; you obviously need rest as your brainpower is way below par.

Normand...don't bother me while I'm sleeping. Thanks for the advice. Gotta rest up for more "shilling".

The family members are to be commended for their help in giving him the chance he wants and needs. He is also to be commended for working towards his goals to lose weight and be more healthy. Also to not expect it for free, but to work cleaning the pool great story.

What a lovely story. And how lucky to have found an indoor pool. Good for him. I hope he sticks with it and loses more weight. Kudos to the Campbell-Wynn family.

Great Story! Yes, this is heart warming and more news worthy than some other stories out there.
**Too many to count or discuss**
And a Very Big Congrats to the family who let him into their home to use the pool. Not many people would do something like that today. Not only are they helping him with his emotional issues of public swimming, but they are helping him to loose the weight through the use of the pool.
      Good Go Duff....keep on swimming!!

It is great to see that, in spite of the short-lived inability to find suitable quarters in which he can carry out his plans, Mr. Duff was able to succeed with the help of this family. What is also heartwarming to hear is that in spite of the challenges, Mr. Duff is being persistent in his goals. You have my best wishes because, were I in your situation, Mr. Duff, I wouldn't have had the ability to pursue this for the result that you have had. Good luck to you. Three cheers for the Wynn family as well.

Makes me laugh when people are ignorant and cut down someone who is heavy and trying to do something to better themselves. At least he is taking the initiative to better himself and try to lose weight. We all know that losing weight isn’t easy, and when you have to lose hundreds of pounds it is a very uphill battle, it is extremely difficult and speaking from experience when you work hard and then people make snide comments about your weight makes you think "why the heck bother" and you run back to eating. I say if you see a heavy person who is at least trying encourage them, it will make them push that much harder. And for those who say “they got themselves like that its their fault I have the right to make fun” You don’t know the circumstances that made them that way.
This world would be a far better place if people weren’t so negative and judgmental towards each other.

I remember similar situation. An obese lady was allowed to go swimming with her husband at the hotel pool nearby after operating hours. It was a nice gesture from the staff.

Its craz,y people who are overweight end up getting almost trapped by people who are in shape , thin , whatever. You try to get back in shape- go for a walk for example- people laugh and harrass you for being overweight, you go to the gym people stare and make comments. Watch tv everyones skinny who isnt on a weight loss show. Society makes u feel so ashamed of yourself u dont want to go out, its like people make u feel like your not allowed to live because of your weight. Then all you hear is oh if your that fat you must eat like a pig- when alot of people actually gain weight because they are starving themselves, eating once a day, trying not to gain weight, thinking eating next to nothing will work. Society is cruel if you dont look a certain way, and im to the point that I soon will not leave my house anymore because of the way people treat me. Im glad this man actually found some decent people to help him and wish him luck. Thats all it takes, people not judging people , but helping them.
