P.E.I. farmers turn in 30,000 kg of unused farm pesticides

Over 30,000 kilograms of unused pesticides were collected by the P.E.I. Federation of Agriculture from Island farmers.

In addition to pesticides, farmers could dispose of livestock and horse medications.

It was the first time those items were added to the collection.

The federation partnered with CleanFarms, a non-for-profit organization, for the third time to help get rid of what was collected.

The collection was disposed of in an environmentally friendly way.

"It really gives farmers an environmentally responsible way to manage out-of-date pesticides as well as out-of-date livestock medications," said John Jamieson, the federation's executive director.

"Any of the products that they use all have a best-before date on them essentially. When you collect 33,000 kilograms in one year, it shows that it's needed."

Farmers are asked to keep all unused and outdated items until the next collection in 2017.
