P.E.I., Sask. premiers to present on health care findings

Premier Robert Ghiz says he would want to make sure P.E.I.'s influence within Canada would remain the same in any reform of the Senate.

P.E.I. Premier Robert Ghiz says he and Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall will be briefing the other provincial and territorial leaders next week on their work in making changes to the health care system.

They are co-chairs of the health care innovation working group and will present their initial findings at the Council of Federation meeting next week in Halifax.

They will make several recommendations and it will be up to the premiers to decide what to do next, Ghiz said.

“We'll see where the premiers stand on the information that we've been able to gather and hopefully we'll have something to announce or we could have something else that we'll have to work on further,” Ghiz said.

“The three areas that we focused on were around clinical practice guidelines, human resources and scope of practice and we also added to the list, looking for areas where we could collaborate around bulk buying of medications.”

Ghiz says the premiers and territorial leaders will also discuss labour force issues, the economy, the Canadian energy strategy and trade.

The meeting starts Tuesday.
