Program accepts farm's unwanted pesticides, medications

Farms across Prince Edward Island are being asked to turn in unwanted pesticides or medication for livestock or horses by Friday, November 14.

The CleanFARMS program will dispose of the chemical-based products free of charge. It is the first time medication is being included in the program.

The service is sponsored in part by the P.E.I. Federation of Agriculture. John Jamieson is the executive director.

"We have a pretty good program with veterinarians, for the most part, taking obsolete livestock medications back from producers" said Jamieson.

"There may be some farmers who haven't had livestock for a number of years that may not have veterinarians on site," Jamieson said. "[The farmers] may have some medications that they want to get rid of, and that is a good opportunity for that."

When the CleanFarms program was held two years ago, 27,000 kg of pesticide products were turned in.

There are seven agriculture retailers across the province accepting the unwanted pesticides or medication from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. They are:
