Saskatoon marchers talk about human trafficking

Human trafficking is a global problem with a local angle, according to a Saskatoon group trying to raise awareness about the issue during a march Saturday.

The group noted that human trafficking extends beyond selling people into the sex trade in far away countries and is related to the overall issue of treating vulnerable people, especially children, like commodities.

"I think if I could, [I would] just kind of gather my friends like today, but more of my friends, and just come out here and kind of help raise awareness," Lorenza Li, 13, told CBC News Saturday during a break in the march.

Savelia Curniski, who helped organize the march, said young people in Saskatoon have also been victims of human trafficking.

"We've been working at this for eight years," Curniski said. "There are people in Saskatoon who we know who have been trafficked like that."

The Saturday event in Saskatoon was part of a national campaign to raise awareness of the issue.
