Suzanne Woolridge named to arts hall of honour

CBC Radio arts producer Suzanne Woolridge, who died in late January after a battling a neurological illness, has been named to the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council Hall of Honour.

The arts council announced Wednesday that Woolridge and Labrador grass basket maker Garmel Rich, will be inducted during the council's arts awards ceremonies later this month.

The award recognizes the work of Woolridge, who filed thousands of reports on Newfoundland and Labrador's vibrant arts community during a lengthy career with CBC Radio in St. John's.

Woolridge died after battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

The arts awards will be presented at the Joseph R. Smallwood Arts and Culture Centre in Gander on April 28.

Nominees for artist of the year are Artistic Fraud of Newfoundland, which is remounting the acclaimed Robert Chafe play Oil and Water for a provincial tour; visual artist Tina Dolter; and actor and filmmaker Ruth Lawrence.

Three visual artists were nominated as emerging artist. They are Jordan Bennett, Jennifer Galliott and Jonathan Green.

Nominated for the arts achievement award, which recognizes the work an artist has made during his or her career, are visual artist and writer Tara Bryan, musician Douglas Dunsmore and visual artist Michael Pittman.

The arts in education award also has three nominees: visual artist Margaret Best, theatre director and actor Sarah McDonald Anderson, and musician and writer Christina Smith.
