Teghan's top 5 things to do in Winnipeg this weekend (April 29-May 1)
This weekend was too busy to include all the cool things I wanted to, so if you have extra time go see the Crooked Brothers at Times Changed this weekend to even things out, OK?
It would be pretty hard to make it to all these shows this weekend, but if you do it, please let me know and I will give you the most deserved gold star in Winnipeg weekend history.
My top pick is probably the Basic Nature show Friday night, with Art City's Saturday fundraiser coming in a close second.
WHAT: COMEDY – The Love Show at Wee Johnny's
When: Friday, April 29 at 8 p.m.
Where: Wee Johnny's Irish Pub at 177 McDermot Ave.
Cost: $5
Tim Gray is back hosting another packed night of comedy at Wee Johnny's this weekend, and they've picked a fabulous theme.
This week's show is all about love, and they've got locals Ashley Burdett, Andrew Lizotte and Chad Anderson on the bill, as well as a few more.
You're basically seeing a bunch of talented locals for a very affordable price in a cozy venue.
Drinks are cheap and the best part is they have brilliant post-comedy bar games like musical chairs.
Go early!
WHAT: MUSIC – Basic Nature EP release
When: Friday, April 29 at 10 p.m.
Where: Handsome Daughter at 61 Sherbrook St.
Cost: $10
I can't stop talking about how rad these two ladies are, and Friday night they're releasing a new single before they head out on tour!
Last week someone asked me who I thought was going to be our next big export, and my first pick was these two.
They're doing some amazing things with just drums and a bass, and if you like Beach House or Grizzly Bear or just very good synth-y, indie stuff, you will love them.
I'm also pretty excited that Lev Snowe is opening for them!
This will probably sell out, so try to make it down at a good time.
WHAT: PARTY – Art City's Golden Age of the Social
When: Saturday, April 30 at 8 p.m.
Where: Skyview Ballroom at the Marlborough at 331 Smith St.
Cost: $30
Art City's biggest fundraiser is back at the Marlborough this year, and the theme is 1960s socials.
Hifi Priestess and a Guess Who tribute band will be playing, followed by a dance party with DJ Co-Op and DJ Hunnicut.
They'll also have a photo booth and art table with stuff for your costume (including fascinators!!).
Little Sister is doing a coffee bar, and there will of course be raffle prizes.
Wanda Koop herself will be there, and all the centre pieces will be done by Art City kids.
This is a pretty great party every year, and it's not just for the sake of partying! It's a fundraiser for all the amazing art programs Art City does in West Broadway.
I love them, I think you will love them, and I think it would be lovely if you went to their party.
WHAT: MUSIC – Yes We Mystic album release
When: Friday and Saturday
Where: The Park Theatre on Friday and the Good Will on Saturday
Cost: $20
Yes We Mystic has two album release shows this weekend – one at The Park Theatre and one at The Good Will.
I'm partial to The Good Will show Saturday night because they're playing with Micah Visser, but any show with Yes We Mystic is a good show.
On Friday, they're playing the Park with Andrew Judah and Shoal Lake Kid. Saturday, it's at the Good Will with Micah Visser and Boreal Sons.
This'll be your last chance to see Yes We Mystic before they head to Europe for a month, so it's worth the slightly pricier ticket.
PS: If you buy them in advance it's only $15!
WHAT: MUSIC – Death from Above at the Burtie
When: Sunday, May 1 at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Burton Cummings Theatre at 364 Smith St.
Cost: $45
Death From Above is playing the Burtie Sunday night, and they're bringing Eagles of Death Metal with them.
At the time of writing this, I was shocked to find out the show wasn't sold out, so get tickets while you can. It's going to be a really fun one.
Plus, who among us will pretend they're above going into work on a Monday slightly hungover?
