Tentative deal announced for Saskatchewan teachers

Saskatchewan teachers were on strike for several days in the spring in support of their contract demands.

Saskatchewan's teachers and the provincial government-trustee bargaining committee have reached a tentative deal on a new contract.

The deal announced Friday is based on the recommendations from a special mediator's report released in July.

That report suggested teachers get a 5.5 per cent wage increase over three years, plus market adjustments of 3.34 per cent to 5.01 per cent.

The tentative agreement will be presented to the 12,000 members of the Saskatchewan Teachers' Federation for ratification over the next few weeks.

Results on the ratification vote are expected by late September.

The last tentative agreement expired in August, 2010.

The contract dispute came to a head in May, with teachers walking out of the classroom for several days to underline their contract demands. A special mediator was appointed to bring the two sides closer together.
