Unreserved: From Thomas King to Tomson Highway

Ever since I was a wee Deerchild I have loved a good story.

From Sesame Street to Reading Rainbow to the public library you could always find me enthralled in one adventure or another. Whether it was comic books, Nancy Drew mysteries or epic tales of goblins, warriors and humble hobbits – a good story never really ends.

But as I grew into my own story – my desire to see and read my own reflection grew. I searched for indigenous heroes on the pages, between the lines and on the covers of my favourite books.

And I found them.

This week on Unreserved, I introduce you to some of my friends and heroes. My inner girl geek could not be more excited.

From the king of the literary world, Thomas King to the new kid on the writing block -- Waubgeshig Rice, we'll hear from some of Canada's best known indigenous authors.

Comedian and writer Darrell Dennis talks about cultural misconceptions and deceptions in his new book Peace Pipe Dreams: The Truth about Lies about Indians.

Taking inspiration from the 19th century Mohawk orator Pauline Johnson, Janet Rogers is word weaving her own story as a spoken word artist.

And can native writers write non-native characters?

Cree Story master Tomson Highway crosses boundaries.

You'll also hear music from The Band, Andrea Menard and Tomson Highway featuring Patricia Cano.

Tune into CBC Radio One after the 5 p.m. news in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Nunavut, and after the 4 p.m. news in Yukon and the N.W.T. for these stories and more on Unreserved. You can also listen on demand.
