Turkish protesters clash with police over trial of policeman

Protests over the trial of a Turkish policeman accused of killing a demonstrator in June have flared into clashes with police.

Ethem Sarisuluk was shot dead during a nationwide anti-government movement across Turkey, sparked off by a sit-down protest in Gezi Park.

A crowd of around two thousand descended on the court house in Ankara, apparently angered by a court ruling that the accused police officer could take part in court hearings via video link.

Police squads attempted to control the crowd using water cannon and tear gas. There have been unconfirmed reports of several injuries.

The Gezi Park uprising earlier in the year triggered a tough government crackdown. In total six people, including a police officer, died during the unrest, which presented one of the stiffest challenges to Turkish premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ten years in power.
