WAM Picks: Spamalot, the science of wine and a winter's hike

Get ready for a hectic weekend, with listings from the WAM team!

Theatre

Monty Python's Spamalot: Atlantic Light Theatre, which staged Les Miserables last year, is staging the musical based on the legendary film Monty Python and the Holy Grail (with a little Life of Brian thrown in for musical measure). King Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table, brave, brave Sir Robin, Patsy ... they're all on board.

Spamalot stars Peter Halley, Dana Parsons and Pete Soucy. Directed by JacintaMackay Graham and Douglas Vaughan. Spamalot runs Friday through Sunday at 8 p.m. at the St. John's Arts and Culture Centre, with a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. All seats $58.60.

Wine tasting

The Johnson Geo Centre, 175 Signal Hill Rd., hosts a wine tasting with a twist. The Science of Wine kicks off Friday night at 7:30 p.m., and features fine wines, science demos, an auction and food by Red Oak Catering. Tickets are $100 (including HST), with a $50 charitable donation receipt issued. Info: 737-7880.

Frosty Festival kicks off

The Mount Pearl Frosty Festival teams up with TaDa! Events for the opening night extravaganza, When Winter Comes, featuring entertainment for the whole family. The show features singers, dancers, aerialists and special effects, with cast members from Our Divas Do Christmas and the upcoming Jesus Christ Superstar, Mount Pearl's own The Company of Etcetera Productions, MAX Arts, Athletics & Wellness and the Mount Pearl School of Dance. Doors open at The Glacier at 6 p.m.; the two-hour show starts at 7 p.m. Admission: a non-perishable food item.

Frosty's Birthday Party: Enjoy a fun-filled day as Frosty and his friends celebrate with magician Mark Webber, Newfoundland Reptiles, inflatable rides, face-painting, prize draws, birthday cake and entertainment by Sonya Abbott. At The Glacier, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free admission.

Alan Doyle: Great Big Sea's singer is taking his solo "So Let's Go" tour across North America, and will play at the Holy Heart Theatre at 8 p.m. Tickets are $37.50 in advance and $42.50 on the day of the show.

Pomp and Circumstance - A dance party hosted by the St. John's International Women's Film Festival to thank volunteers, audiences and all of the people who have helped keep SJIWFF going for 25 years. Eastern Edge Gallery, 10 p.m. 19 and older; no cover. Music by DJs Rude Boi and Danger Bay. Costumes & shiny clothing encouraged.

Mount Pearl Frosty Festival: 2nd Annual International Food & Craft Fair. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Reid Centre. Admission: $3; free for children under 12. Live performances between noon and 2 p.m. Note: Vendors accept cash only.

Hiking: The Avalon Nordic Ski club is not letting the lack of snow get it down. The public is invited to its clubhouse on Sunday at Butterpot Park from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for a winter hike or run, whatever your preference, followed by a hot lunch. Cost: $25, children under 12 are free. Price includes "snowcheck" voucher entitling bearer to a free Outfitters snowshoe, or Avalon Nordic ski rental. Proceeds to go to help a member of the ski community who is recovering from a bad accident.
