Wildfire breaks out near Keremeos

An aggressive 10-hectare wildfire that broke out yesterday northeast of Keremeos, B.C., is not yet threatening any homes, fire officials say.

The fire erupted in grass and sage brush on Upper Bench Road and quickly grew to 10 hectares. Twenty-two firefighters, a bulldozer and a water truck were battling the flames.

Crews are working with the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen to assess the need for an evacuation alert for nearby residents, officials said.

Meanwhile in the Okanagan, the fire near Peachland is now 100 per cent contained and crews are doing mop-up work. The fire danger rating for the region remains high.
