Winkler firefighters rescue dog from abandoned well

A dog is lucky to be alive after it fell down a seven-and-a-half metre abandoned well on the weekend.

Winkler Fire Chief Richard Paetzold said a frantic call came in Saturday from a farmer near Winkler, Man. who had tried to rescue the dog but couldn't.

"I guess the dog is used to sleeping on top of the well and I guess the cover on it rotted away and it went for a fall," said the chief.

Paetzold said the air in the shaft was so bad, his crews needed to use breathing aparatus and pump air into it.

A fire fighter went in himself to get the dog out.

"[We] lowered one of our members down and we used a rescue cot and a very willing dog laid down on it for him, and he hooked it up and raised him out," Paetzold said.

Paetzold said people who have abandoned wells should fill them in or seal them to prevent similar incidents.
