Winnipeg Art Gallery hosts antique, art appraisals this weekend

The Winnipeg Art Gallery is hosting an appraisals event this weekend that could shed light on how much that old painting in your basement is actually worth.

The art gallery is teaming up with Bonhams auction house, one of the world's oldest and largest auctioneers of fine art and antiques, for the weekend-long event.

All 267 appraisal slots are booked up, but the public is invited to come to the gallery and watch the action free of charge on Saturday and Sunday.

"It's exciting. This is the first time we've hosted it and it might be the beginning of many more, but we'll see," WAG spokesperson Tammy Sawatzky told CBC News on Friday.

"It's exciting that people are finding these objects, that they're interested in these objects, and they want to know what they're worth and to tell the story behind them."

Sawatzky said those who have signed up for an appraisal are allowed to bring up to four items each.

"There's a whole variety: paintings, pottery, jewellery, sculpture, artwork, glassware, maps, furniture, you name it," she said.

Those with oversized objects are bringing photographs of the items for the appraisers to review, she added.
