This winter won't be quite as bad, Environment Canada says

Although some gloomy predictions have been made about the coming winter in Saskatchewan, Environment Canada's senior climatologist has a decidedly sunny outlook.

"Some prognosticators have said this is going to be a tough winter — we don't think it is," the weather agency's Dave Phillips told CBC News on Tuesday.

"Our long-term models are showing that, you know, it looks like there's some good news."

Although the weather has turned cool in recent days, and there will likely be snow by Halloween, it could warm up and turn sunnier next week, he said.

The rest of fall doesn't look too bad, either.

"Already there's a sense, there's a hope, that winter will be shorter this year," he said. "If you can knock it off the front end, that's good."

After last winter, which started early and ended late, many people would likely settle for a more normal season, he added.

"If it's normal, it would seem like a tropical heat wave compared to last winter," he said.
