3-year-old dead, another child seriously hurt after being hit by SUV in Etobicoke

A three-year-old is dead and another child has been rushed to a trauma centre after being hit by a driver in an SUV in Etobicoke on Tuesday, police say.

Police said in a tweet that emergency crews were called to the area of The East Mall and Burnhamthorpe Road at 11:07 a.m.

Det. Brett Moore told reporters at the scene that a vehicle struck the child, as well as what appears to be his older sister and father. They were crossing the street at the time, he said.

"The driver is cooperating and is on scene," Moore said, later adding that it is "way too early" to say if any charges would be laid.

The three-year-old was pronounced dead, while the other child and the adult were taken to hospital.

"It's not a fatal situation right now, but she was struck and there are injuries involved," Moore said.

"We are going to be asking the local community, anyone who saw something, to come forward."

Khrystyna Moro lives on the street, and saw the aftermath of the incident.

"I saw a small body and I guess what looked like a father and another child just kind of over it," she said.

Though collisions happen sometimes in the area, she said she's never seen anything like this.

Roads in the area will be closed until later this afternoon, police say.
