While Porsche 911s and E30 M3s got more and more expensive, we could always rely on cars like the Miata and older hot hatches to stay reasonably priced, things that could scratch the enthusiast itch without the need for a second mortgage. While that likely isn't changing, we now know that people will pay nearly anything for a prime example of the type.

A 1992 Volkswagen Golf GTI 16V sold for $87,000 on Bring a Trailer the other day. This is not necessarily a typical example, it looks absolutely perfect and has just 53,000 miles on the odometer, making it an essentially brand-new 31-year-old car.

This does show a shift in the market, though. A similar GTI 16V, a Canadian-market model, also in red and with just 75,000 miles, sold on BaT less than a year ago for $42,560, that's half the price. The majority of sales of the model hover around $15-25k.

That this sold for so much more is both an anomaly and a sign that pristine examples of these cars are about to take off in value. Still, paying nearly six figures for a VW hatchback is a tough thing to understand.
