2 music shows to see in Ottawa this weekend

Speaking of CBCersMCing benefit concerts, Friday night I'll be joining three songbirds on stage at 404 McArthur Ave, the soon-to-be-home of Heartwood House. Jennifer Noxon, Chris MacLean, and Christine Graves are loaning their lovely singing talents to perform in honour of the newest addition to the Vanier neighbourhood.

Heartwood House was formerly on Chapel and Rideau, but when the organization heard their building was being put up for sale it quickly looked for a new home, one it could actually own and hopefully never be kicked out of! Heartwood House is an incredible collective of charitable organizations who know there is strength in numbers. Everything from Anxiety Disorders of Ontario to The Ottawa Jewish Historical Society has a home in Heartwood House.

The event also includes a silent auction and I'm crossing my fingers that songwriter Jennifer Noxon — who is also an incredible painter — has a piece in the auction. There's also a cash bar and desserts (a recipe for terrific). Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and you can get tickets at Ottawa Folklore Centre, Books on Beechwood, Compact Music, or heartwoodhouse.ca.

Friday is also a bounty of riches: in addition to the event mentioned already, Peter Hum has jazz in Kanata and The Soul Motivators are in the Byward Market, plus a host of acts listed below. I want to give the final word to all the men who are sporting a stiff, hairy upper lip this month. This one's for you: Ottawa country rocker Jack Pine is down with your cause, mustache'ing himself for the cause of bringing awareness — and money — to men's cancers and men's health in general.

He just released a new video for last year's mustachional anthem Mustache is King in order to give the tune new, ahem, growth. Jack Pine and The Fire go on stage after Sin Sisters Burlesque open the show, and Lefty McRighty is going to spin two-steppin' beats between the sets. Tickets are only $10 for this great cause. If you can't make it but want to hear that catchy tune, even buy it, go to www.jackpinefire.com and dance, shave to it, whatever you wish.

As always I'll have more picks, including for Saturday, on In Town and Out with Giacomo Panico Saturday morning between 6-9 a.m. (I recommend Scarlett Jane at the National Arts Centre's Fourth Stage!)

On Bandwidth Saturday, 5 p.m. on Radio One: it's Grey Cup weekend so it's time for everyone to play the unofficial anthem of Canadian football's highest honour: My Cousin Has a Grey Cup Ring by Donovan Woods. I had a chat with him about how weird it is to have that song become famous and he tells the story behind it as well.
