One man was killed and another critically injured in a shooting outside a Mississauga elementary school late Wednesday, Peel police say.

The shooting happened around 11:10 p.m. in the parking lot of Settler's Green Public School, in the area of Montevideo Road and Lorca Crescent, according to Const. Tyler Bell.

A group of roughly 10 to 20 people had gathered in the lot on the east side of the school and there was an altercation, Bell said.

Two men, one in his 40s and another in his 20s, were shot. Both had life-threatening injuries and were taken to hospital, where the older man later died.

The two men were "associated" with each other, Bell said, but the exact nature of their relationship is still unknown.

Several vehicles were seen speeding away from the area following the shooting. Bell did not have descriptions of those vehicles or possible suspects.

The Peel District School Board said Settler's Green is open to students Thursday, but the parking lot is closed. The board said it is drafting a letter to be sent to families with children who attend the school.
