Best and worst 2022 Super Bowl commercials with callback to 'The Sopranos', Lindsay Lohan, Scarlett Johansson and Dr. Evil

It's that time of year again, all eyes were on Los Angeles for the 2022 Super Bowl, Super Bowl LVI, but if football isn't your game, there is plenty to watch with the Super Bowl commercials, with some star-studded ads.

These are some of the best, and worst, Super Bowl ads to watch this year:

Grade A: Chevrolet with Jamie-Lynn Sigler as Meadow Soprano

The is one core thing that the universe needs to know after this Chevrolet commercial, yes all of us would absolutely watch a spinoff of The Sopranos with Meadow, played by Jamie-Lynn Sigler, as the lead character.

Watching this recreation of the famous opening sequence was such a tease, we need more Meadow and AJ (Robert Iler).

Grade A: Uber Eats with Jennifer Coolidge, Nicholas Braun, Gwyneth Paltrow and Trevor Noah

Jennifer Coolidge and Nicholas Braun together is the duo we never knew we needed, but we love.

The concept for this ad is a comedic warning that Uber Eats now delivers things you can eat and things you can’t eat, like paper towels and aluminum foil, and even Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop vagina-scented candle.

Grade A: Planet Fitness with Lindsay Lohan

We are very excited about the Parent Trap star’s return to our screens, even if it’s just for a Super Bowl commercial.

This Planet Fitness ad is based on one question: “What’s gotten into Lindsay?” Gone are the days of Lindsay Lohan’s late night partying and she’s “trading DUIs for DIY.” The ultimate message is that fitness makes you feel better and make better choices, but it’s really just great to see those callbacks to Lohan’s headline-making events from the 2000s. It would have been even better if it had a song from her album “Speak” to go along with it, but we’ll take what we can get.

Grade A: General Motors with Mike Myers as Dr. Evil

Dr. Evil and Scott Evil are back, with Canadian Mike Myers and Seth Green reuniting for a General Motors Super Bowl ad, where Dr. Evil has to save the world from carbon emissions before taking over the world.

It feels like a lifetime ago since we’ve seen these characters and we’re always on board for a bit of Austin Powers nostalgia.

Grade A: Amazon with Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost

In all honesty, we would have been very disappointed if an ad with a Saturday Night Live “Weekend Update” host and writer wasn’t funny.

The concept is, what if Amazon Alexa could read our minds? Well that puts the couple in an awkward position when Alexa starts spilling their inner thoughts. Our favourite is when Scarlett Johansson is rehearsing a scene and when Colin Jost asks when the show opens, Alex says, “setting reminder to fake your own death on March 8.”

Grade A: FTX with Larry David

Crypto ads were definitely popular for the 2022 Super Bowl but really, the topic is almost irrelevant for us because Larry David is in this commercial.

The comedy legend doesn’t disappoint in the humour department with all the antagonism we know and love, as someone who doesn’t think crypto is going to “be the next big thing.”

Grade A: McDonald's with Kanye West, Bubba Wallace and Edwin Castro

We have Kanye in a Sherp ATV - need we say more?

Even better, apparently beloved Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds is actually the voice of Grimace in this commercial, and we love a hidden gem. Good job McDonald's.

Grade A: BMW with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Salma Hayek

Electric vehicle-related commercials are a trend for 2022 Super Bowl ads, and this BMW one may be one of our favourites.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is Zeus and Salma Hayek is Hera. The couple have made the decision to leave Mount Olympus and retire in Palm Springs, California. While Hera is adapting to her new way of life, Zeus is having a bit of trouble, so Hera buys him a new electric BMW iX.

Hearing Schwarzenegger and Hayek sing the song “Electric Avenue" is entertaining and a little baby Pegasus was one fo the cutest things we’ve seen.

Grade A: Google with Lizzo

This commercial promoting the Real Tone feature on the Google Pixel 6 celebrates the beauty of everyone, and every skin tone.

It also features a new song from Lizzo, titled “If You Love Me,” which she recently teased on social media.

Grade B: Booking.com with Idris Elba

Booking.com isn’t “lit,” is the premise of the ad, but we would maybe beg to differ after using the iconic Idris Elba in their Super Bowl commercial.

Poking fun at the very basic, on-the-nose name for their site, we love a brand with self-awareness, but truly, Elba could say just about anything and we’d be entertained.

Grade B: Toyota with Paralympian Brian McKeever

Brian McKeever is Canada's most decorated Winter Paralympian, winning 14 medals after the 2018 games.

This Toyota commercial not only celebrates him, but his older brother, Robin, as Brian’s sighted guide for cross-country skiing races. The duo won 10 Paralympics medals together.

It truly is an inspiring ad that highlights this great brotherly bond.

Grade B: Disney+ with Awkwafina

We all love Awkwafina so the second she popped up, we were excited. Various jokes about things that are the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) are getting a little stale, in our opinion, but you can’t deny seeing those goats dressed up as characters in the extensive Disney+ catalog is pretty funny.

Grade B: Nissan with Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara and Brie Larson

Eugene Levy is an absolute Canadian comedy icon, but what about putting the Schitt’s Creek star in an action flick?

Well Nissan sort of brought that to life in this Super Bowl commercial where Levy, met with Catherine O’Hara, Brie Larson, Danai Gurira and Dave Bautista, drives her car off a building, through fire, of course.

Grade B: Caesars Sportsbook with JB Smoove, Halle Berry and the Manning family

We have to admit, we’re getting a little tired of seeing Peyton Manning in so many Super Bowl commercials but JB Smoove and Halle Berry are also legends, so we’ll accept it for this ad.

Grade B: Bud Light Hard Seltzer Hard Soda with Guy Fieri

The Food Network star, and his iconic hair, are making a splash during the Super Bowl with a Bud Light Hard Seltzer Hard Soda commercial.

Guy Fieri, who is the mayor of the "Land of Loud Flavours" in this ad, claims that these seltzers are "the loudest flavours ever." Although we really hope there isn't a place where everyone has Fieri's haircut and style.

Grade B: Rakuten with Hannah Waddingham

The Ted Lasso star is truly a Queen and frankly, someone we would be scared to bet against. But one brave woman keeps up with our beloved Hannah Waddingham due to her Rakuten purchases, which doesn’t make the actor very happy.

Grade B: Michelob ULTRA with Serena Williams, Peyton Manning and Steve Buscemi

This is one of the more star-studded commercials, featuring athletes Serena Williams, Peyton Manning, Jimmy Butler, Nneka Ogwumike, Alex Morgan and Brooks Koepka.

All of Michelob ULTRA’s ads will be taking place that this vintage-inspired “Superior Bowl” bowling alley, which we see in this ad is operated by actor Steve Buscemi, and we do like the kind of continuous storytelling that's happens between all of the brand's commercials.

While all these athletes in this ad are phenomenal, our money would be on Williams to beat them all in this showdown.

Grade B: Doritos

Admittedly, this commercial has a rough start with all these wild animals making odd sounds and facials expressions after eating some Flamin’ Hotel Cool Ranch Doritos and Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, but the sounds turn into a chorus of animals singing Salt-N-Pepa’s “Push It.” It’s definitely giggle-worthy.

Grade B: Crypto.com with Lebron James

We love a bit of nostalgia so looking back to 2003 and a stack of CDs is right up our alley. It does make you wonder, how would your younger self respond to what life is like in 2022?

Grade B: Bitbuy with Kyle Lowry

We had to show some love to our Canadian Super Bowl commercials, with the Bitbuy crypto marketplace brand.

It's not the best of the bunch but trolling Kyle Lowry about missing "over 6,000 shots in his career" will make you giggle.

Grade C: Greenlight with Ty Burrell

Some of us may be feeling a little too seen with the way one of our favourite TV dads, Ty Burrell aka Phil Dunphy from Modern Family, is spending his money.

We really hope that creepy massage chair with all the hands in the ad isn't real. Save your money and learn how to make better financial choices.

Grade C: Budweiser

If you were missing the Budweiser Clydesdale, this is a commercial for you. There is no mistaking that the horse is an iconic part of Super Bowl ads.

Grade C: Expedia with Ewan McGregor

If there is one thing COVID-19 really made us miss, it was travel. This commercial with Ewan McGregor may not be the flashiest ad but it does make you want to book your next vacation.

Grade D: Hellmann's with Pete Davidson and Jerod Mayo

We may be a little tired of the classic “football player tackles smaller people” bit we always see in Super Bowl ads, or maybe the Hellmann's message of “don’t waste your leftovers, just add mayo,” is getting a bit stale.

We were hoping for something a bit different from Hellmann's this year, especially when they even had Pete Davidson on board.

Grade D: Intuit with DJ Khaled

This commercial isn’t completely not funny at all, but it just had so much potential to be better, funnier. It’s just not that funny to hear "All I Do Is Win" sung poorly.

Grade D: Irish Spring

We really wanted this one to be good because it has a great setup. A man enters this Irish Spring cult “where stinky-ness is unwelcome.”

It just leans a little too much into the innocently silly.
