Here are the 2023-24 All-Observer boys’ and girls’ wrestling teams

Mallard Creek’s Cameron Stinson and Lake Norman’s Caleigh Suddreth headline the 2023-24 All-Observer boys’ and girls’ wrestling teams, respectively.

Stinson is boys’ wrestler of the year after finishing 62-0 this season and winning his fourth consecutive N.C. High School Athletic Association state championship.

Stinson, who finished 205-0 in his high school career, won the 106-pound title as a freshman, the 113-pound title as a sophomore and the 120-pound championship as a junior.

Stinson, who will continue his academic and athletic career at the University of North Carolina, won his third Charlotte Observer wrestler of the year honor.

Suddreth, the girls’ wrestler of the year, finished 11-0 and won her fourth straight individual state champion at 152 pounds.

The NCHSAA officially sactioned the sport for the first time and offered a true state championship. Previously, it had been an open invitational.

Suddreth won the NCHSAA girls’ invitational title three times.

Suddreth plans to attend the United States’ Military Academy this fall.

Charlotte Latin’s David Paige is the overall coach of the year after leading the Hawks to back-to-back state championships and the school’s 25th title overall.

The Hawks were 29-1 this season with three individual state champions in Liam McConaughy (106), Davis Jones (113) and Austin Flowers (175).

All-Observer boys’ wrestling

First team

106: Cameron Gue, Mount Pleasant: The Tigers’ sophomore won the 2A state title, going 43-3 this season.

113: Trevor Freeman, A.L. Brown: The Wonders’ senior, a Coast Guard Academy (CT) commit was 48-0 and won the state title.

120: Kaden Simpson, SouthLake Christian: The Eagles’ junior was 27-1 on the way to an NCISAA state championship.

126: Cameron Stinson, Mallard Creek: The four-time 4A state champion and University of North Carolina commit was 62-0 this season.

132: Gavin Ulrich, Metrolina Christian/Bentley Sly, Stuart Cramer: Ulrich, a sophomore, won his third straight NCISAA state title, going 39-5. Sly, also a sophomore, was 51-1 on his way to the 3A state championship.

138: Charleston Baglio, Central Cabarrus: The Vikings’ senior, an Appalachian State commit, repeated as a state champion (126 pounds last year), going 41-1 this season.

144: David McEachern, Mount Pleasant/Noah Lilly, Providence Day: McEachern, a junior was the 2A state champion going 50-1 this season. Lilly, a senior went 53-6 on his way to the NCISAA state title.

150: James Weaver, North Gaston: The Wildcats’ junior was 56-7 on his way to the 3A state title.

157: Eli Murray, Lake Norman: The Wildcats’ senior, a Duke commit, was the 4A state champion, going 50-3 this season.

165: Trey Wilfong, Charlotte Christian/Colton Campbell, Hickory Ridge: Wilfong, a senior and N.C. State commit, won the NCISAA state title going 41-1. Campbell, a junior, was 58-0 on his way to the 4A state championship.

175: Austin Flowers, Charlotte Latin: The Hawks’ senior went 38-4 on his way to the NCISAA state championship.

190: Jason Hubbard, Metrolina Christian/Jesus Jarquin, Monroe: Hubbard, a junior, went 33-6 on his way to the NCISAA state title. Jarquin, also a junior, was 40-1 this season, capping it with a 2A state runner-up finish.

215: Johnny Merriman, Mooresville: The Blue Devils’ senior capped his high school career with 4A state title, going 35-1 this season.

285: Geviaunta Walker, Lincolnton: The Wolves’ senior went a perfect 54-0 on his way to the 2A state title.

138: Brianna DeLeon, Weddington: The Warriors’ junior repeated as a state champion (132 last year) going 18-3 overall this season.

145: Brooke Gladue, Cuthbertson: The Cavaliers’ junior finished fifth at the state championship meet, going 16-4 overall this season.

152: Caleigh Suddreth, Lake Norman: The Wildcats’ senior capped her career with a fourth straight state title, going 11-0 this season.

165: Jayden Holmes, Olympic: The Trojans’ junior was 28-3 this season, finishing fifth at the state championship meet.

235: Allison Sanders, North Iredell: The Raiders’ junior was 30-5 this season, finishing fifth at the state championship meet.
