Not every model coming out of Mercedes has to be a fire-breathing, four-cylinder rocket. For many buyers, comfort and style are paramount above all else, especially for those looking for the open-air driving experience. Mercedes plans to capture these leisurely buyers with its new CLE Cabriolet lineup.

Blending the former E-Class and C-Class coupes together, the CLE Cabriolet fills the drop-top gap in Mercedes' lineup, though its pricing structure goes far beyond its CLE Coupe sibling. Offered in two trim levels and with two different powertrains, the standard CLE 300 4Matic Cabriolet will start at $65,500 while the Pinnacle trim CLE 300 goes up to $68,100. Compared to the CLE 300 4Matic Coupe, the convertible version adds $7850 to the starting sticker price.

Moving up to the base trim of the CLE 450 4Matic Cabriolet will run you a clean $75,000, and the Pinnacle trim version rises to $77,600. While the CLE 300 models use a 2.0-liter, turbocharged, inline-four making 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, CLE 450 units rely on a 3.0-liter, turbocharged inline-six making 375 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Both powertrains also benefit from a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, providing coasting and energy regeneration abilities.

Compared to the outgoing C-Class Cabriolet, the CLE-series comfort suspension is 0.6 inches lower, though an even sportier suspension with adaptive damping is available on the CLE 300 and standard on the CLE 450. Equipping the sport suspension package also integrates a wider range of suspension and steering weight adjustments through Mercedes' Dynamic Select controls.

Creating a positive drag coefficient out of a roofless vehicle isn't exactly easy, but Mercedes has made some key adjustments to the CLE Cabriolet to keep it stable and efficient. Mercedes' proprietary electric wind deflector system is used on the windshield and rear headrests to help fuel economy and passenger comfort.

Mercedes says it also wind-tunnel tested the soft top, which can be operated at speeds up to 37 mph. If you get too cold, the car also has Mercedes' Airscarf technology on the headrests up front, blowing warm air around the neck area regardless of temperature or wind conditions.

Inside the new CLE Cabriolet, Mercedes' standard 12.3-inch driver display and 11.9-inch central multimedia display are present. The central infotainment display can also be tilted up to 40 degrees to account for open-top sun glare. With available Nappa leather seats, Mercedes has also added a special coating to the leather to keep the seats cool in direct sunlight. Surround sound technology is provided by Burmester, Dolby Atmos, and Spatial Audio, with a total of 17 speakers included.

Last but certainly not least, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLE Cabriolet lineup will be the first convertible Mercedes to have separate head airbags for each rear passenger. That brings it to a total of 11 airbags, including a new center airbag between the two front seats.
