“What If...?”'s 3rd and final season will be a 'very fulfilling culmination' for the Watcher

"It feels like the completion of a trilogy," Marvel TV boss Brad Winderbaum says.

Marvel's What If...? has a literal question mark in its title, but the series is planning to end in a satisfying way for fans.

While teasing the upcoming third and final season of Disney+'s animated MCU series, Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios' Head of Streaming, Television and Animation, revealed that it will end in a "fulfilling" way for Jeffrey Wright's narrator, Uatu the Watcher.

"It feels like the completion of a trilogy," Winderbaum says on on Wednesday’s episode of the Official Marvel Podcast. "It takes us to places that you’d never expect. It goes beyond the first two seasons in its exploration of the multiverse. It pulls in characters that are very unexpected, and has what I think is an extremely moving and very fulfilling culmination for Uatu the Watcher."

The MCU's first animated series introduced alternate versions of events from major Marvel movies, including Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) becoming the first Avenger, Captain Carter, and T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman, in his final MCU appearance) becoming Star-Lord instead of the king of Wakanda.

Wright has voiced the Watcher since the series debuted in 2021, and over the first two seasons, the all-knowing cosmic being has gone from simply watching the events of the multiverse unfold without interfering to ultimately having a major impact in saving his beloved heroes.

"He's not the Watcher that he was at the beginning," Wright previously told Entertainment Weekly. "He's a different Watcher now. He's broken the fourth wall, so that's wonderful because it gives a nice complexity to the character, and it also allows him to be active in ways that he wasn't at the beginning of the series. It's exciting stuff."

Season 2 ended with Captain Carter saving the multiverse from Strange Supreme (Benedict Cumberbatch), and asking the Watcher to show her other worlds/timelines before returning her home.

What If...? does not have a season 3 premiere date yet.
